Six Michigan biotech companies picked for funding event.
Six Michigan biotechnology companies have been selected to present their business plans to a crowd of venture capitalists and investors at the
upcoming BIO Mid-America VentureForum in Chicago, April 3-4. BIO, the biotechnology industry association, hosts events that have led to hundreds of
millions of dollars in investment in biotech companies. A total of 70 companies will showcase their business plans to venture capital firms in the
first-ever Midwestern-focused biotech event, co-sponsored by BIO state associations from Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio
and Wisconsin. Michigan's representatives include:
- Afmedica Inc. (www.apjohngroup.com), a
privately held medical device company in Kalamazoo working on technology for prevention of scar tissue and improved dialysis treatment
- Asterand (www.asterand.com), a privately held clinical genomics company in Detroit that
is building a tissue and blood bank for use in both commercial and academic research
- HandyLab (www.handylab.com), a venture-backed, development stage company is creating
microfluidic technology that enables biochemical analyses to be performed on a chip at a speed, cost, and scale previously unachievable
- Integrated Sensing Systems (www.mems-issys.com), an Ann Arbor company developing the
use of microsystems sensors in a variety of medical devices, with an aim toward better monitoring and diagnosis
- Rubicon Genomics, (www.rubicongenomics.com), an Ann Arbor company developing
technologies and services to advance diagnostics and drug discovery across multiple health care markets
- Velcura Therapeutics Inc. (www.velcura.com), which is developing therapies that
stimulate bone formation for disorders such as osteoporosis, bone fractures, and periodontal disease. Last year's BIO VentureForum showcased 93
companies from around the world and resulted in venture capital investment totaling $400 million.
